Double Knitting Basics

Double knitting is a unique method of making a fabric with no "wrong" side and a built-in reversible colorwork design. Significantly different from the standard intarsia and Fair Isle colorwork that are so well known, double knitting is a labor intensive but wholly worthwhile technique to have in your repertoire. In this workshop, you'll learn to do an easy double knitting cast on and a more difficult but invisible double knitting cast on. You'll start with a k1 p1 rib and see just how that is really the base of all double knitting. Then you will learn how to read a double knitting pattern.

Skill Level: Intermediate

This is an advanced technique, but you need only be comfortable with the long-tail cast-on and basic knit and purl stitches to join this class. Previous experience with colorwork is also helpful but not required.

Materials and Homework

Bring 2 colors of a light worsted or DK weight yarn – nothing fuzzy and no thick and thins. Something that gets between 16 and 20 stitches per 4" in stockinette.
For learning this technique one ball (100yds) of each color is enough. To knit a scarf – like the one in Bruce's book BOYFRIEND SWEATERS pictured here - you will need 400 – 500 yards of each color. Knit a swatch at home to find which needles you like best. Knit your swatch in stockinette and in a k1 p1 rib – and bring the needles that create the fabric you like most. But also bring needles one size smaller to the class.

Speed Up Your Knitting

Workshop Overview

Learning to knit without looking
Discovering time-saving and efficient hand movements
Reducing needle movements
Working the tips of the needles only
Basic Continental knitting
What is Combination Knitting?

We’ll talk about how to combine any and all of these techniques to fit your style and patience level. And we will have an ongoing therapy session to help everyone understand that while some of the exercises we do will increase your speed right away, changing your knitting style will improve your speed over time as your hands adjust to new movements – learning to knit all over again.

Skill Level: Open to all

Many knitters are happy knitting slowly and patiently, taking months to finish a simple sweater or years to finish a blanket. But if you want to knit faster there are exercises and techniques we can learn to help pick up speed.

Materials and Homework

Bring a worsted weight yarn and needles that give you a stockinette fabric that you like – not too tight. Cast on 30 stitches and knit 2 inches. Keep the yarn on your needles and we’ll start from there.

Trigger Warning: Class will involve wearing blindfolds.
